  I worked in the ED and overall was happy with my experience. Scrubs are provided for all ED staff by the hospital which as really nice. Staff was generally really friendly and helpful, it's a very travel-friendly facility. Lots of outdoorsy stuff to do in the area.

  Emergency Dept here! Love the people down in ED but the only issue I’ve seen is that it can often take upwards of 2-4 hours for the initial ER provider to even signup for the patient once they are placed in a room from the waiting room.

  I can say that this is one of the worst treatment I’ve ever had in my 4 years of traveling. The OR staff is lazy and the management has no clue. They made sure to give the nurses breaks but not the scrub techs. And it’s a very high school girl click which I will never be a part of and if you’re not then get ready to work your ass off and get the worst cases and don’t bother to expect more than a 30 minute break from a 12 hour shift

  Known as Monument Health Rapid City Hospital. Ratios 1:4-5 depending on census. I was there during winter months and staff was low census’d pretty much every single night we were there, including travelers. Always got my break. They staff their techs very heavily and they go through an extensive training process and are very helpful. Phlebotomy in ED. Level 2 trauma center that serves a 500-mile-ish radius for trauma. Large amount of psych, alcohol abuse, and trauma. Dedicated psych area with 4 beds, each with cameras and security seated outside watching cameras at all times. They also have a psych facility that they send nearly all patients too so very easy to get them accepted quickly and out of the ER. They also have a detox center that can be utilized for ETOH patients on discharge as well as what they call “safe bed” for patients to sleep at overnight on discharge. Security transports these patients and psych on discharge quickly so no real wait time on that. Scrubs are no longer provided to ED staff and you must bring your own. Managers are wonderful. They are very traveler friendly. Many things to do outdoors during warmer months, but the majority of Rapid City shuts down by like 10pm (in the winter atleast) so there’s really not a ton to do in winter besides snowboarding/skiing imo. Overall, would definitely go back to this hospital and enjoyed my time there.

  Extended here three times in a row. Their scheduler and making friends with staff is the only reason I stayed as long as I did. Unit is split into pods where you can have 4 rooms plus 1 hallway bed. There’s also a 4 bed psych area and an 8 bed vertical care area run for urgent care/lower acuity patients. RNs do take these areas, but they have been trying to hire more LPNs to take the psych or vertical care area patients so nurses are left with taking pods. High acuity patients as this is the largest hospital in the western side of South Dakota, many transfers coming from Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, North Dakota. Always absorbing patients from surrounding sister hospitals and very rarely shipping anyone out which can lead to holding patients for beds upstairs for hours on end. Some travelers do get assigned to the ‘big zone’ to be assigned up to 4 trauma rooms. They were getting verter about having flex nurses to help complete tasks/give lunch breaks towards the end of my stint. Many travelers extend or come back as staff. Very traveler heavy staff but also traveler friendly. A bit cliquey and you learn who to be on the good side of as far as charge nurses, staff, doctors, etc.

  The management is awful in the ICU and the culture is very toxic. In the three months I was there for my assignment they fired five travel nurses, one who only had four shifts left of his contract! They also fired two staff nurses during my time too. Felt like I was walking on eggshells the whole time. Travelers got written up all the time for the DUMBEST things. If a staff member didn’t like a traveler and they complained to the management about it, they were fired. I’ve never seen such a toxic culture. Especially because the entire ICU is literally run by travelers… The workload was fine, and the patients weren’t usually super sick. Usually a 2:1 ratio except a few times they were short staffed so it was 3:1 but not for long. As a traveler you could never take CRRT or a fresh heart. The doctors were also very toxic. They were just plain mean. I did not enjoy my time here except for the other travel nurses I worked with who were awesome and nice.

  Staff in pediatrics were very nice and always willing to help. Ratios on gen peds were up to 1:5 which sometimes felt a bit much. PICU was low acuity and mostly only staffed 1 nurse back there. Same charge nurse for both peds and PICU which can sometimes be complicated.
